The Predicting Adequate Response to Oxytocin Study is being offered by the MuMH Lab at the University of Arizona.
Why are we doing this study?
- Oxytocin is sometimes called the “love hormone.” Our bodies release it during labor, birth, and breastfeeding—it helps with bonding, keeps labor moving, and reduces bleeding after birth. Sometimes, people are also given oxytocin as a medication, which works in a similar way.
- But here’s the thing: oxytocin doesn't work the same for everyone. Some people respond strongly, and others don’t respond as much. We want to better understand why this happens, so that birth can be safer and more personalized for every family.
- In our previous study, we found that people who bled more after birth often had a chemical change in the oxytocin receptor gene (the part of the body that helps oxytocin do its work). This same change was linked to needing higher amounts of oxytocin during labor. These changes in DNA can be influenced by life experiences, like stress, trauma, or environment.
I'm planning a spontaneous, unmedicated birth. Can I still participate?
- Yes, absolutely! We also need people planning spontaneous, unmedicated births to join. These experiences help us understand how the body’s natural oxytocin works during labor and after birth. Having this information is essential for comparing across different types of birth, whether or not medications like Pitocin are used.
What are we asking?
- Saliva sample and a cheek swab
- Complete a prenatal survey about ancestry, mood and stress, childhood experiences
- Complete a postpartum survey about your maternity care and birth experience, mood, and infant feeding
This study won’t change anything about your pregnancy care plan
You may be eligible if:
- You are 15 years old or older (minors must have guardian permission)
- You are pregnant
- You speak English or Spanish

- ¡Claro que sí! También necesitamos la participación de quienes planifican partos espontáneos y sin medicación. Estas experiencias nos ayudan a comprender cómo funciona la oxitocina natural del cuerpo durante el parto y después del mismo. Contar con esta información es esencial para comparar diferentes tipos de partos, con o sin medicamentos como la oxitocina. Su participación nos brinda una visión más clara y completa de cómo la oxitocina contribuye a partos seguros y saludables.
¿Qué estamos pidiendo?
- Contribución de un hisopo de mejilla y una muestra de saliva
- Completar una encuesta prenatal
- Completar una encuesta posparto
Esta investigación no cambiará nada sobre su plan de atención durante el embarazo
Puede ser eligible si:
- Tiene 15 años de edad o más (los menores deben tener el permiso de un tutor)
- Está embarazada
- Hablas inglés o español
